Do I Have Anxiety, Depression, or Both?
Depression and anxiety can be confusing because they often occur together and frequently share symptoms. Do you have one or both of these conditions? Learn more about each and how they’re similar.

Depression and anxiety are two of the most common mental health disorders, but they’re also widely misunderstood. They share similar symptoms, and each can spiral out of control without treatment. A proper diagnosis is key to getting the help you need to combat these conditions and take control of your life.

At Ketamine Health & Wellness Clinics of Ohio, our seasoned team of mental health experts serve patients in and around Dublin, Ohio, who struggle with anxiety and depression. Here, we explain more about these common disorders — and how we can help.

Could I have an anxiety disorder?

Every person on the planet deals with some anxiety, but when that anxiety disrupts your life, it is considered a disorder that requires treatment. Common signs of anxiety disorders include:

  • Constant worry; difficulty focusing outside of your worries
  • Frequent feelings of wanting to escape or of impending doom
  • Racing thoughts; physical shaking or trembling
  • Rapid breathing, a rapid heartbeat, and excessive sweating
  • Becoming easily fatigued; ongoing muscle tension
  • Difficulty falling asleep or staying sleep (insomnia)

When you encounter these symptoms most days for at least six months, you likely have an anxiety disorder that requires expert evaluation and care.

What does depression feel like?

Like anxiety, depression can also take over your life and cause daily problems. Common signs of depression include:

  • Persistent sadness, hopelessness, and feelings of guilt
  • Activities you usually enjoy no longer seem interesting or fun
  • Ongoing fatigue and difficulty concentrating
  • Slowed physical movement or speech noticed by others
  • Significant appetite and weight changes (increase or decrease)
  • Sleeping too much or having difficulty sleeping (insomnia)
  • Thoughts of death, including considering suicide

Major depression occurs when any combination of these symptoms occurs on most days — and persists throughout the day — for two weeks or longer.

Can depression and anxiety happen simultaneously?

Anxiety and depression can co-occur, meaning happen at the same time. You can also suffer similar symptoms from both, like fatigue, sleep problems, or problems concentrating.

In fact, research affirms that three in five people (60%) with anxiety also have depression. The numbers are similar for depression with anxiety. When you have both disorders, mental health experts may refer to the condition as “anxious depression.”
